Problem: I have several tapes, and I have no idea what’s on them.
Solution: Pre-label your tapes before you shoot on them.
Do you keep a blank tape in our camera bag just in case you need one. Of course you do. Don’t be ridiculous!
Now, please take a few extra steps.
- Take the spare tape out of the wrapper
- Adhere a blank label onto the tape (It’s included with the tape inside the hard case.)
- Keep a pen inside your camera bag.
This is going to save you a heap of frustration later on. Just do it. Trust me.
Now, label like a pro.
When it’s time to swap out tapes, whip it out. (I mean the pen, you freak.)
Write the date onto your waiting blank label, using the following format:
YY MM DD (ie. 090720 – for July 20, 2009.)
Make the same note on the box insert label also. On the part that shows up on the thin side of the tape.
You can make notes on the box insert, if you want to. This is extra credit work.

Mini DV Tapes
Why should I label my tapes like this, oh- wise and commanding one?
Because 3 years from now, you’ll want to edit your kid’s first roller coaster ride.
You’re going to open a photo box full of 38 tapes, and you’re going to want to go right to the tape that has the footage you’re looking for.
No Problem.
All your tapes are arranged in chronological order.
You’ll find the right tape, and you’ll want to thank ME for writing this tip.
There’s no need to call me or e-mail me with your thanks, future you.
The knowledge that I have uncluttered one more video tape box (3 years from now) is thanks enough.
You’re welcome.
