DVD is not an acceptable format to edit from. It was designed to be a final delivery format- and is only suitable for distributing final video work.) See if you can get the tapes converted to DV codec movie files, and delivered to you on DVD ROMs (As opposed to video DVD.) Expect a price of around $40-$50 per tape. To do this yourself, look for a SONY Digital 8 camcorder. I've seen them going for $100-$200 on ebay. Only SONY ever made them, but they all will play analog 8MM (and Hi8) tapes and pass them through as a DV stream through firewire. Be aware that you'll need a firewire port on your computer to utilize this method. You could also look for a video capture device that plugs into your computer. Check out your local Best Buy (or equivalent) and ask what kind of hardware they have to capture video into a computer. I know that your best bets on a Mac would be an Elgato EyeTV. For PC, Canopus, Pinnacle, and Datavideo are all companies that make devices perfectly suitable for your needs. These will all run you about $200. Don't forget- you'll need editing software too. If you have a Mac, then iMovie should have come with your computer- and is really powerful. PCs come with some ok software in theMedia Player bundle that will do basic editing.
